Rifts and N-Gage -- honestly, why?

Logan just sent this link to me. I think he's having a bit of a freak-out over it, seeing as he's a big Rifts fan and he despises the Nokia N-Gage (kind of like the rest of the gaming community at large). Anyway, according to the release, Rifts will finally be made into a video game for the first time ever on any platform. Unfortunately, Palladium has struck a deal with Nokia to bring the title to N-Gage -- and it looks like it's exclusive. That also means only about a few thousand people will ever play it. Heheh.

Comments:
Gah the bastards! I can excuse the fact that the game will probably be crap when it's released but why did they have to release it on a crappy system where I'll likely never get the chance to inflict it on myself.

Damnit.

My letter to Palladium. Yes this was actually sent to the good people at Palladium Books earlier today.

Rifts on N-Gage.

While I'm certain that by now these contracts are inked in blood and about as escapable as Alcatraz in its prime I can't help but express regret over the choice of platform for the Rifts videogame.

While I'm more than glad that the Rifts universe will finally see some exposure in the video game industry the choice of medium was, in my opinion, somewhat unsound.

While I'm certain the good people over at Nokia put forward a good sales pitch their system has the weakest distribution of any console (portable or otherwise) which is presently on the market. This concerns me as even if the Rifts video game is of superb quality the number of people who will have an opportunity to play the game is likely only going to be a fraction of your existing player base. Not because they can't afford the game but more likley because they're not willing to invest money in what is viewed by the gaming industry at large as Nokia's multi-million dollar mistake.

While I recall mention that Nokia will be releasing an updated and no doubt improved version of the N-Gage I doubt even this will free them of the stigma they carry from their first attempt at a video game console.

In summary let me put forward the following:

Rifts Videogame = Good Idea
Rifts Videogame on N-Gage = Bad Idea

Please tell me that at some point in the future the Rifts videogame will someday be released on one of the more "mainstream" videogame systems so that I might actually have a chance to try it.

Sincerely,

L.Speak.
