I just returned from a showing of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. I'm not sure if it's the fanboy in me being annoyed at the changes they made to the story (half the script was written for the movie -- I couldn't believe it) or if it was really as bad as I thought. I found myself forcing myself to laugh at the jokes. I know they're funny, dammit! Was it the delivery? Were the jokes not set up properly? I really don't know.

Some goods things came out of the movie, though. Some highlights:

A really great theme song.

The cameo of the BBC version of Marvin.

...

Nope, can't think of anymore. I gotta get a copy of that theme song, though.

Comments:
I wasn't overly impressed with this particular version either. Although I do appreciate that they where trying to portray some of the more obscure visual elements in a new and innovative way, I found it a tame, watered down version with poor casting choices and questionable direction regarding some of the characters.
Since when was Zaphod an asshole?
What's with the love story?
Trillian disappears from the books in the parking lot of the Restaurant. IF (cringing at the thought), they decide to plod through up to 4 more movies, they're going to have to do some serious rewrites or we're going to be subjected to the sob story while Arthur faces extinction thanks to the Golgafrincham inflation policies. Zarquon appears at the end of that one, I have a vested interest here to not look like a dink.
There where definately parts that really should have been gut splitting, but the delivery fell pretty short of the mark. I attribute this largely to casting, but also the fact that most of the jokes where boiled down to the punch line, without the actual lead! Let's not even talk about the towel issue and how Ford appears to be the only person in the Universe preoccupied with it's greatness and judging by his use of it, is clueless to it's more versatile functions. Everyone else in the movie just kind of looks at him like he's a putz whenever he mentions it.
Stronger actors and a basic knowledge of at least one of HHGttG's previous encarnations probably could have gone a long way to saving it.
The decision to use 'real' Vogons and other creatures was brilliant and was a welcome change to the blatant use of computer generated graphics that seems to infest everything we watch nowadays (check the new Dr. Who series for an examples of such excess). It's similar to the inundation of the D20 system. Neat, yes. Excessivly? Very bad.

Agree with you on the theme song (the one nicked from the origional BBC series) was just as good as always, and the Dolphin song during the title was great.
I'd also like to point out that the president of Magrathea was the origional "Dent-Arthur-Dent" from the hit BBC mini-series.

Zarquon.
