Here I Stand
I'm surviving on little more than coffee this morning. I'm just beat. I didn't get home until 2:15 this morning. It's a good thing I work for home, otherwise I would've got even less than five hours of sleep.
The group that got together to play Here I Stand last week reconvened this week to play again. While last week was mostly a learning game in which we only played the first three turns to get a feel for how the game worked, last night's game was meant to be the first of two sessions for a full nine-turn game.
As we finished up the third turn around 11:00-ish, it was decided to just continue on and do one more turn. That took us until after 1:00, at which point I was getting the nods pretty severely. However, there won't be any need for a second session. George wrapped up the game with a Protestant win at the end of the fourth turn.
I'm not really sure what to think of the game itself. It's okay, but I don't think I'm going to fall in love with it. Since it's a card-driven game, there's a lot of luck involved. Basically, if you don't get a good hand of cards, you're screwed. If you get a great hand, you stand a better chance of doing what you need to do.
As France, I got shafted on a couple of turns (partly because of poor cards and partly because of poor moves on my part), and I was really just pushing to keep gaining a measly one victory point per turn. When the game ended, I had 16 VPs ... tied with the Papacy, who had his ass handed to him by the Protestants.
