Until today, I had no idea that Disney's the Black Cauldron was based on a series of children's novels, The Chronicles of Prydain. I know they're a bit low for my reading level, but now I'm curious enough to read these. I'll have to see if I can find copies of the books.

Wow. I'm a bit surprised you missed this one. But then I'm not sure how much young adult stuff you read.
The series is considered one of the classics of YA literature. The books are always in print and recommended.
Also suggested is Susan Cooper's 'Dark is Rising Sequence'.

I've read very few young adult novels in my life. Even when I was a young adult, I was reading adult novels -- like George Orwell's Animal Farm in Grade 7 (while at least one classmate hadn't progressed beyond Judy Bloom).
I didn't read The Hobbit until I was in college. The only Narnia book I ever read in its entirety was The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. I tried reading one of the others (The Boy & His Horse, I think) but gave up a few chapters into it.
Well, and then there's Harry Potter. I've read those.
I'm not even sure if I've ever even heard of the Prydain Chronicles. :-/

I seem to recall doing one of my grade 6 book reports on them. Suffice it to say it's been a while so my memory might be off but I think it was the grade 6 teacher who was the first one to actually maintain a reasonable selection of books.

I'm reasonably sure I may still have my "Dark is Rising" kicking around somewhere, but it'll require some box poking.
